Defending Secularism: Why Voting for Democrats Is Crucial to Protecting Our Freedoms

  • by

Republicans have been trying to push Christianity into public schools for years, and with a Supreme Court now stacked with justices confirmed under hypocritical and unethical circumstances, they are making significant headway. Louisiana is set to display the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms by 2025, while Oklahoma is integrating the Bible into K-12 education. These moves are a direct result of the GOP’s manipulation of the judicial system, as exemplified by the rushed and unethical confirmations of Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh. These confirmations weren’t about fair governance; they were about control.

The GOP’s actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the separation of church and state. The Bible will be in public schools in Oklahoma because of Republicans.   There are great groups like the Freedom From Religion Foundation and the ACLU who will go to court to protect the students in Louisiana and Oklahoma, and it is likely these cases will reach the Supreme Court. The typical pattern we’ve seen over time is that Republicans violate the Constitution by inserting Christianity into publicly funded places and then force secularists to fight these cases in the courts. For many years, the separation of church and state has been upheld by the Supreme Court. It wasn’t until Trump swayed the balance of the court that the separation of church and state is clearly at risk on many lives that affect our daily lives. Do you trust this Supreme Court, which overturned Roe v. Wade, to rule in favor of secularism?

Take note, Donald Trump has taken full credit for the overturning of Roe v Wade. The very fabric of our nation’s secular principles is at risk, and it’s clear that keeping America secular depends on us uniting to reject the Republican party and voting for Democrats.

The Supreme Court has the lowest approval rating among the three branches of government. The Biden/Harris administration has proposed Supreme Court reforms to help improve the Court, and a majority of Republican voters agree with these reforms when not informed they were proposed by Biden. It’s worth noting that Republicans in Congress don’t care that even Republican voters agree with these reforms. Their pursuit of power, often corrupted by money and a disregard for the people they’re supposed to represent, has led them to declare the SCOTUS reforms “dead on arrival.”

Improving the Supreme Court is something that is more likely to happen if Kamala Harris is elected President and Democrats expand power in Congress. If Trump wins, we can expect him to further corrupt the system. If we are to keep America secular, it is up to all of us to unite, reject the Republican party, and ensure that they do not attain power by voting for Democrats. We must elect rational, empathetic Democrats who prioritize the needs of the country to protect our freedoms and address the bigger issues facing our nation and the world.
