So, you’ve probably heard some misleading claims about Kamala Harris’s record as a prosecutor. There are internet trolls who use this as their single issue to distract from the obvious truth that Kamala is far superior to a corrupt fraud like Donald Trump.
First, let’s start here: anyone familiar with Kamala Harris knows she’s a badass American warrior who fights to uphold our laws and the Constitution while being fair, kind, and empathetic. It’s frustrating that those who try to discredit her with lies—like those spread by Tulsi Gabbard—are out of touch with who Kamala truly is.
Here’s a summary of the lies:
Regarding marijuana convictions, Kamala Harris didn’t personally prosecute these cases. As California’s Attorney General, she was bound by duty to uphold state laws “for the people.” The marijuana cases were handled at the local level. During her tenure, she actually oversaw a significant reduction in marijuana prosecutions and has been a consistent advocate for legalization.
On the claim that she “blocked evidence” that could have freed death row inmate Kevin Cooper, Kamala wasn’t involved in that decision. It was made by lower-level attorneys, and she had no direct connection to it. Even though she had nothing to do with it, like a real leader she took responsibility for the team beneath her and expressed her remorse in an interview with Nicholas Kristof, stating, “I feel awful about this.” Contrast this with her opponent, Trump, who infamously called for the death penalty of 5 innocent black men (the Exonerated 5), spending $60,000 to run ads against them (wtf are you doing racist?) and still refuses to show any empathy—a stark difference from Harris’s compassionate approach.
Finally, the claim that Harris kept prisoners beyond their sentences for cheap labor is another distortion. While attorneys in her office did make such an argument regarding using prisoners for wildfire combat, Harris was “shocked and troubled” when she found out. She immediately took action and instructed her team not to use that argument again.
In summary, these attacks are baseless, pushed by those either spreading propaganda or simply unable to understand the facts. Tulsi Gabbard’s deceitful rhetoric is dangerous because it aims to dissuade people from supporting the exact kind of leadership we need.
A simple Google search could have clarified these points, which is why we saw D.L. Hughley apologize at the DNC for ever echoing these claims.
