If anti-American Republicans attain the power they crave this November, it could easily bring about the demise of internet communities where discussions run contrary to their desires. Project 2025 makes it clear why people across the web are raising alarms about Republican plans. The transition plans of the Trump administration signal dangerous disruptions to our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness if Republicans get their chance. They play dirty, catering to their billionaire handlers, despite only about 25% of Americans agreeing with their policies.
Project 2025 (pg 847) refers to the elimination of immunities that courts have ruled on, which would remove protections from online platforms, making platforms legally responsible for user-generated content. This would force platforms to either shut down or implement strict moderation and censorship. Adding to the tumult and confusion, page 849 limits “online platforms’ ability to moderate content,” which experts believe will lead to a proliferation of hate speech and misinformation. These elements are now more vaguely referred to and reframed in Agenda 47 (page 15, sec 2), where the authors claim they will “dismantle censorship.” While some have a genuine concern about losing our social media platforms and safe spaces, I believe the most likely outcome is a proliferation of hate speech online, coupled with a corrupted Republican-led court system that allows it. The world would become more angry, dangerous, hostile, and violent.

If Project 2025 were fully implemented under a second Trump administration, the consequences for atheists and free thinkers who discuss their views on platforms like Facebook could be dire. Project 2025 outlines a radical vision for government, aiming to consolidate power in the presidency and dismantle the bureaucratic and structures that currently provide checks and balances. This plan includes bringing independent agencies, including those that regulate technology and media, under tighter White House control, and using Trump loyalists instead of those loyal to America?.

A central tenet of Project 2025 is to combat what its architects call the “Great Awokening,” a term they use to describe progressive social movements. This focus on attacking “wokeness” could easily extend to suppressing voices that challenge religious orthodoxy or bolster science that runs contrary to the Republican agenda. The plan’s focus on controlling media narratives suggests that social media platforms could face increased pressure to censor content that the administration deems “anti-American” or “immoral,” which could easily include atheist communities that I help manage. My work to ensure Trump doesn’t get elected was inspired in part by our Facebook community.
Should Trump win the presidency again, there is a real risk that the rights of non-believers could be eroded, with online spaces becoming increasingly hostile to free expression. Under such a regime, discussions that non-believers care about could be stifled, and platforms that allow for open discourse might be targeted for regulation or outright censorship, drastically shrinking the digital space for these conversations.
The implications are clear: if Trump returns to power and enacts Project 2025, it could lead to a chilling effect on free speech, with particular danger for those who use social media to discuss anything that contradicts the messaging of the new de facto dictator.
